International superstar Marc Anthony (who we've seen lately with a Custom Shop Les Paul Acoustic) is performing for the 3rd annual Latin Grammy Awards, to be broadcast Wed., Sept. 18 on CBS. Anthony is nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category of Best Salsa Album. He won a Grammy earlier this year for Best Tropical Latin Performance. Anthony's guitarist Andy Abad is featured on this month's cover of The Gibson/Baldwin Player. |
![]() "Becoming" Avril Lavigne | Baldwin creates the mood for Miss America A Baldwin SD10 Concert Grand and two Baldwin 243 vertical pianos will create the musical magic for the Sept. 21 broadcast of the "Miss America Pageant," live from Atlantic City, NJ on ABC. Everybody Wants to be Avril A future episode of MTV's show "Becoming" with hot newcomer Avril Lavigne will feature exclusively Gibson gear. A Les Paul Special Humbucker and Les Paul Standard will be front and center in the re-creation of Lavigne's video, "Complicated." A lucky fan will be picked and transformed into an Avril look-alike, get the rock-star treatment and perform in the mock video. Tune in for added surprise elements on the show. Lavigne's debut album, Let Go, was certified platinum in the U.S. within five weeks of its release, double platinum in Lavigne's native Canada, and platinum in Japan one week after its release. She recently won MTV's Video Music Award for New Artist in a Video for "Complicated." |
![]() | Gibson receives U Rock! Award Fan-oriented rock and roll Web site Score! Music Magazine honored Gibson with its "U Rock! Award" for August, in appreciation of the Gibson festivities that took place during the summer National Association of Music Merchandisers trade show. Tribute 9/11 guitar on display at Madison Square Garden Guitar pioneer Les Paul has donated one of his personal Gibson Les Paul model guitars to raise funds for the Uniformed Firefighters' Association Widows and Children Fund, and it's currently on display at Madison Square Garden near the History of MSG wall. Peter Ortel, a retired New York City fireman from Rescue 3, painted a poignant September 11 scene on the instrument. Following its display, the guitar will be auctioned online through eBay. |
![]() | Celine's Vegas extravaganza to feature Baldwin Look for Baldwin SF10 Artist Grand pianos onstage at Caesar's Palace when Celine Dion begins her three-year engagement in March 2003. Dion's show, billed as a one-of-a-kind theatrical musical spectacular production, is being created by Franco Dragone and will run in a new 4000-square-foot theater designed to look like the Coliseum in Rome. The Chicks Hit the Road The Dixie Chicks, in support of their new album, Home, have made a series of television appearances playing Gibson instruments, including the "Today" show and "The Late Show With David Letterman." Lead singer Natalie Maines has been strumming a new Blues King acoustic from the Gibson Montana division and multi-instrumentalist Emily Robison has been pickin' a Gibson banjo. Bluegrass mandolinist Adam Steffey, part of the Chicks' backing band, has been playing his new signature model mandolin from Gibson's Original Acoustic Instruments division, based on the F-5 scroll body design. Bob Dylan wows crowd at Newport Folk Festival Bob Dylan returned to the Newport Folk Festival Saturday, Aug. 3, and fans had nothing but applause as he walked onstage around 5:30 p.m., slung a Gibson Montana J-45 acoustic over his shoulder and, with former Vice President Al Gore standing just offstage, led his four-piece backing band into an acoustic version of "Roving Gambler." The legendary singer-songwriter last played Newport in July 1965, when he famously "plugged in" for the first time, smashing barriers between folk and rock, and was booed by some folk-music purists. |

Hank Williams Jr. was presented with a special football guitar made by Gibson's Custom, Art & Historic division to celebrate his long-standing relationship with ABC's "Monday Night Football." He used the prototype during the recording of this year's commercial spots for the NFL. The football guitar is a Les Paul with a top covered with authentic football leather provided by the Wilson sporting goods company and football lace material was used for the binding. USA Today ran a full-length feature on Hank in the Sept. 5 sports section, and he was pictured with his new Gibson. Bon Jovi rocks the NFL In related news, Bon Jovi entertained football fans as part of NFL Kickoff Live from Times Square, a televised free football and music festival prior to the San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants game Thurs., Sept. 5. The concert was in support and recognition of New York Citys Sept. 11 memorial events. Guitarist Richie Sambora played an array of Gibsons including a Les Paul Classic, 58 Reissue Les Paul, 59 Reissue Flying V, 59 Reissue Flying V with black pickguard and an ES-335 cherry w/ Bigsby tremolo, made in Memphis. He totally rocked out on the Flying V during halftime activities as well. Where will my Baldwin take me? A new print ad campaign for Baldwin pianos features the all-time single season home run king, San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds; pop chanteuse Vanessa Carlton; and piano man Ben Folds. The ads, with the slogan "Where will my Baldwin take me?" will run this fall in various lifestyle magazines including O, The Oprah Magazine, Smithsonian, Home and Garden and Traditional Home. Other eclectic Baldwin-loving personalities will be added to the campaign as it picks up steam. |
![]() | Prince Charles the Axeman Prince Charles strapped on a Gibson SG in an effort to relate to his young volunteers for The Prince's Trust charity organization during a visit to Rhayader, Wales on July 19. God Save the Queen Two giant 13-foot Les Paul standards flanked the stage for Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace June 4 in London. The concert celebrated the Queen's 50 years on the throne and featured performances by rock and pop legends including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Jones, Queen guitarist Brian May and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. | New albums capture live excitement, holiday cheer Ben Folds will release a new live album in October. Folds compiled the songs from 50 shows recorded during his latest tour. A new Christmas album, Maybe This Christmas, features an original song from Folds ("Bizarre Christmas Accident") and a traditional song from Vanessa Carlton ("Greensleeves"). The album will be released Nov. 5 on the Nettwerk America label. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Toys for Tots Foundation. Newton tours for United Service Organizations Golden hipster Wayne Newton has been playing a Gibson Montana J-185 EC, Memphis ES-175, and a vintage Gibson TB-800 banjo while on his latest USO tour in support of American servicemen and women. Newton does an annual USO tour in addition to his regular three-month gig at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. Gibson remembers Tajuki Miki Artist/producer Takuji Miki, 33, with Japanese pop outfit Ann, passed away of complications from pancreatic cancer on July 29. Formerly a guitarist with well-known Japanese rock band RAZZ MA TAZZ, Miki signed an artist endorsement contract with Gibson in 1995 and his preferred guitar was a Howard Roberts Fusion III. Memorial concerts for Miki are planned in Osaka and Tokyo on Oct. 28 and 30, 2002, with members of Ann and RAZZ MA TAZZ performing. Our sincere condolences go out to his family. |
