Artists come together for Timothy White benefit in New York City

Sheryl Crow was one of many artists celebrating the life of late Billboard editor in chief Timothy White at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Music to my Ears benefit concert included performances by Crow, Roger Waters, Sting, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett, John Mellencamp and Don Henley, and was the second benefit for the family of White, who passed away suddenly June 27 of a heart attack in Billboard's New York office. The first concert took place in Boston at the FleetCenter Monday, Oct. 7. Here, Crow is shown backstage with her Signature Gibson acoustic guitar.

Warranty Repair Shop restores the Man in Black's instruments

Gibson's Warranty Repair department, a division of Valley Arts Guitars and Design, recently completed work on six of country legend Johnny Cash's instruments that had aged and sustained water damage from a faulty sprinkler system, including two Gibson 5-string banjos, a violin, two acoustic guitars and an electric guitar. The division has relocated their offices to a new facility on Church Street in Nashville and is currently taking in all brands of instruments for repairs and restoration work. Gibson to support pickin' and grinnin' at World of Bluegrass Week

Gibson will be out in force for the International Bluegrass Music Association's World of Bluegrass Week, Oct. 14-20 in Louisville, Ky. Look for the Original Acoustic Instruments showcase in the Nunn Room of the Galt House Hotel, and also the Gibson booth in the trade show area. The new A-9 mandolin will be on display, along with instruments from the Gibson Montana division, Gibson Strings and Original Equipment, and Epiphone guitars. For those looking for nighttime entertainment, there will be performances in the Nunn Room Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 18 and 19, from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Gibson Labs announces digital guitar at AES

Gibson Labs debuted the first digital guitar at the 113th Audio Engineering Society Convention, Oct. 5-8 in Los Angeles, Calif. The guitar utilizes Gibson's MaGIC digital transport protocol. Gibson also formally introduced a new line of rugged, reliable amplifiers and line-array speakers for systems contractors. The new speakers have patent-applied-for technology and are designed to deliver high-quality sound reproduction. The amps provide extremely high-quality amplification that takes the abuse live music applications can induce.



Bruce Hornsby to receive Legends of Music kudo

Piano man Bruce Hornsby will perform at the first annual Legends of Music Awards Oct. 25 at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center in Norfolk, Va. Hornsby is one of eight honorees for the evening including Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald, Dorothy Maynor, Ruth Brown, Tommy Newsom and Gary "U.S." Bonds.

Parlez Vous Baldwin?

A Baldwin Artist Grand piano is on display in the National Music Museum in Paris as the the focal point of Bosnian artist Braco Dimitrijevic's sculpture "Italian Rhapsody With a Touch of Suprematism." The Baldwin is located in the main entrance to the Museum, atop a pile of logs that are to symbolize nature. Other artists' piano sculptures include a work by renowned French artist Arman. The exhibition runs from Sept. 20 - Jan. 5, 2003.



Dwight Yoakam's Bakersfield Biscuits are killer, and so is his guitar!

Through a special promotion with Dwight Yoakam's Bakersfield Biscuits, Gibson Montana is giving away an autographed Dwight Yoakam limited-edition Honky Tonk Deuce guitar. Bakersfield Biscuits are being sold at Wal-Mart and select grocery stores across the country. Look for the special gold sticker on the biscuits - the official entry form is inside the package. Yoakam first rolled out his biscuits for the grand opening of Buck Owens' Crystal Palace restaurant in Bakersfield, and the response was so great, he decided to market a frozen version nationally. He and Owens collaborated on the duet "Streets of Bakersfield," which appeared on his 1988 platinum-selling album, Buenos Noches From a Lonely Room. Kiefer Sutherland gets stoked with CS-356 on Fox TV show "24"

Watch for Kiefer Sutherland to play a semi hollow body Gibson CS-356 on a future episode of the hit Fox TV series "24." Sutherland, an avid Gibson collector, had a band scene written into the script for the show.



Catch a wave with the new Donzi Les Paul Classic Guitar

Gibson's Custom, Art & Historic division is teaming with Donzi Marine, a division of American Marine Holdings, to produce a limited-edition Donzi Les Paul Classic guitar modeled after the Donzi Classic Series boat. The Les Paul has the same streamlined visual elements as the boat, including the Donzi Classic royal blue paint scheme with white racing stripe and the recognizable Donzi shield depicting a lion and a dolphin. The hardware and pickups are chromed like Donzi hardware and the Donzi logo is inlaid in pearloid on the guitar's ebony fretboard. For more information, go here.

Conan O'Brien rocks out on Emmy Awards

Late-night funnyman Conan O'Brien hosted the 54th Annual Emmy Awards, using a Gibson Montana SJ-200 Elite in a musical skit, vamping on Jethro Tull's song "Aqualung." O'Brien joked that instead of the usual music that swells up when award winners go over their allotted time on acceptance speeches, he was going to sing the song in the most annoying way possible to silence the award recipients.

Kenny Olson loves hot bikes and hot guitars

Kid Rock guitarist Kenny Olson is featured in the November issue of Easyriders, a magazine for motorcyle enthusiasts, with the new limited-edition Les Paul Indian Chief guitar. Gibson introduced the guitar in conjunction with the debut of the 2002 Indian Chief motorcycle. The bike has a new Indian Powerplus 100 V-Twin engine, the first engine designed by Indian in 50 years and, at 100 cubic inches, the largest American OEM V-Twin engine. Easyridersissue #353 hits the newsstands October 8. Also, look for Kenny with the guitar in the Oct. 15 issue of V-Twin magazine.


McDonald's shoots commercial in guitar shop

Truetone Music in Santa Monica, Calif. is the latest site for a new McDonald's television commercial. Gibson is the main guitar supplier for the small shop, and a Gibson Firebird VII and an Epiphone Wildcat are in full view during the commercial. The spot is already airing, so the next time you see the Golden Arches on your screen, don't touch that remote!


Gibson and Baldwin to support World's Largest Concert

Gibson and Baldwin are sponsoring the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) World's Largest Concert, which will be taped Oct. 24 in Washington, D.C. Millions of school children, teachers and citizens from around the world will participate simultaneously in the WLC sing-a-long program, which will be broadcast on PBS and the Armed Forces Radio & Television Network overseas. The program airs in March 2003.




Les Paul rocks out at the Iridium Club

Pioneering guitarist Les Paul and his Trio play a regular Monday night gig at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City, which attracts artists from all musical genres who sit in with the master. Here, Les is shown with country artist Charlie Daniels on Monday, Aug. 5, and Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora on Monday, Aug. 19.


Gibson Nick Lucas acoustic makes dramatic appearance on daytime TV

Progressive country singer Shannon Lawson is doing a scene with a Nick Lucas acoustic guitar for an upcoming episode of the popular soap opera "As the World Turns." The show did a series of episodes in Nashville recently with several country artists written into the plots. The installment with Lawson is slated to air in November.
